Paul Rudd & Paul Giamatti Star in Timely Dark Comedy Movie From Spotlight Director

Marvel vet Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame) and Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti (The Holdover) have signed on for leading roles in an upcoming dark comedy, which hails from acclaimed filmmaker Tom McCarthy (Spotlight). This comes less than a week after Sony Pictures Classics acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the climate change movie.

What is Paul Rudd & Paul Giamatti’s new dark comedy movie?

According to The InSneider, The Statement is currently the creative team’s working title for the upcoming dark comedy movie, which will be based on the Losing Earth novel by Nathaniel Rich. Besides Rudd and Giamatti, Golden Globe nominee Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass) has also joined the main cast. Production is expected to begin at the end of February.

“The film is billed as a dramatic, darkly comic, true story that asks if any group of people can sit together and tackle the problems of our time when we can’t agree on how to arrange the chairs,” reads the movie’s initial synopsis. “At a beachside resort in Florida in 1980, 20 experts gathered for a weekend conference on a global issue that’s starting to gain traction: the effects of Co2 emissions on the climate. This group of scientists, activists, and policymakers has one simple mandate from Congress: write a statement about what to do. Easier said than done.”

McCarthy is directing the timely movie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Thomas Bidegan and Noé Debré. It is produced by McCarthy for Slow Pony, Mary Aloe, Bard Dorros, Jonathan King, David Levine, Jonathan Schwartz, Nick Shumaker, and Jim Whitaker. Executive producers are Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alex Gibney, Davis Guggenheim, Laurene Powell Jobs, Andrew Lauren, and Blye Faust. In addition to acquiring the movie’s rights, Sony Pictures Classics will also co-finance it.
