Another Huge Avengers Hero Not in Doomsday Confirmed

Mark Ruffalo has now addressed whether Bruce Banner, aka Hulk, will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. This update comes as fans are hoping to see the Jade Giant return for the next Avengers-level showdown.

Mark Ruffalo disappoints Hulk fans for Avengers: Doomsday

When Marvel unveiled the cast for Avengers: Doomsday last March, the list included several major MCU players but left out a number of familiar faces. One of the most noticeable omissions was Mark Ruffalo, who has played Hulk since The Avengers and has remained a constant character throughout the franchise.

That uncertainty has now been addressed. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Mark Ruffalo reportedly confirmed that Hulk will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday. While the reported confirmation may come as a letdown, the actor stressed that his time as Bruce Banner is not over, explaining that he would return “as long as they keep finding cool things to do with Hulk” (via ComicBook.com).

From a story perspective, the absence may not be surprising. Reports suggest that events in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where Hulk is confirmed to appear, could leave Banner in a volatile state. That direction would make it difficult for him to join a coordinated Avengers team-up or engage in a strategic fight involving Doctor Doom.

Hulk’s uncertain future also reflects a long-standing issue within the MCU. Since his debut in The Incredible Hulk, the character has never received a solo sequel, instead mostly seen as a supporting one in ensemble stories. While those appearances helped make Hulk a fan favorite, they left many viewers feeling his arc remained underdeveloped.

Avengers: Doomsday will be directed by the Russo Brothers with a script from Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron. The film releases on December 18, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.

For now, Hulk’s absence from Doomsday may signal that Marvel is holding the character back for a story that finally places him front and center rather than just another team-up appearance.
