DCU Batman Casting Timeline Gets Disappointing Update From James Gunn

James Gunn offered a new update on the DCU’s Batman plans, addressing ongoing questions about casting and development. The DC Studios co-head shared an update on the status of The Brave and the Bold. He explained why fans may be waiting longer than expected for casting or development news.

What James Gunn said about updates for the DCU Batman movie

James Gunn confirmed that updates on The Brave and the Bold will not arrive until there is “an actionable script ready,” adding, “so there is no way of me guessing this.” He also stated, “we’re well into Batman 2, and I wouldn’t want to cloud the Batsphere until after that.”

Gunn clarified he has no intention of releasing two Batman movies in the same year: “I’m not at all [undervaluing Bruce Wayne]. I think both Batman and WW are incredibly important. But I’m also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year.”

Gunn acknowledged the script is still evolving, stating, “Exactly. Or it could seem like it’s one draft away and then you get the next draft and go, ‘You know what? I still think it needs one more draft to get there.’” A fan commented, “It’s not a science, it’s art,” in reference to script development, and James Gunn responded, “Exactly,” agreeing with the sentiment. Gunn denied 2025 Batman audition rumors, saying, “All these rumors of Batman and Wonder Woman auditions are false.”

Gunn addressed speculation about having two Batman versions by saying, “I wouldn’t want to cloud the Batsphere until after that,” referring to The Batman 2, set for release in October 2027. He added, “I’m not at all. I think both Batman and WW are incredibly important. But I’m also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year,” indicating that The Brave and the Bold will likely follow Reeves’ sequel by a significant margin.

Gunn confirmed a greenlit, unannounced DCU project and said Dynamic Duo is going “really, really well.” On Clayface, he noted, “James [Watkins] is still in the first cut… producers are always hands-off during the director’s cut.”
