Jason Momoa ‘Wanted to Play’ Lobo More Than Aquaman

Jason Momoa’s Lobo is set to debut in the DC Universe in Supergirl, releasing on June 26, 2026. Now, months ahead of the film’s release, the former Aquaman actor has expressed his excitement at tackling the role. Notably, he has been open about his desire to play the rough alien mercenary in the past.

While promoting his new film, The Wrecking Crew, the 46-year-old actor was asked about playing Lobo in Supergirl.

Jason Momoa called the character “amazing,” adding that it was his “ultimate dream” to play Lobo. “I wanted to play him more than Aquaman, this is it,” he elaborated while speaking with TODAY.

In the official teaser trailer for Supergirl released last month, Lobo has a blink-and-miss appearance at the 1 minute and 35 seconds mark.

Jason Momoa was cast as Lobo in December 2024. The Fast X actor confirmed his casting on Instagram. He shared a screenshot of a quote from a past interview expressing his desire to play Lobo, calling it “the perfect role.”

Interestingly, before his casting as Lobo, Momoa revealed in an interview with Fandango while promoting Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom that he initially thought he would be playing Lobo in the DCEU before he was cast as Aquaman.

Three months later, James Gunn shared a screenshot of his and Momoa’s text message on the day the former was announced as DC Studios co-CEO alongside Peter Safran on Instagram. In the message, Momoa expressed his desire to take on Lobo with two words, “F—– Lobo.” To this, Gunn revealed his years-long support of the casting idea. He responded, “Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years, no lie.”

Several months later, Safran told Entertainment Weekly that Momoa had been talking about playing Lobo with him “forever.” He further stated, “He was talking about it when he was doing Aquaman with me. He was talking about, ‘I’d rather be doing Lobo.'”

Safran continued, “But when the day was announced that we got this job [leading DC], he texted both of us, all caps, ‘LOBO,’ 10 exclamation marks. That was it…And a few Xs.”
