Kathleen Kennedy discusses if Star Wars: Starfighter will get sequels
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy stated that Lucasfilm designed Star Wars: Starfighter as a standalone film. “This was designed as a real stand-alone,” she said. While director Shawn Levy created a positive experience and the film featured a strong performance by 14-year-old newcomer Flynn Gray, Kennedy stated, “With Shawn’s movie, this could go on, but it’s not our intention right now.”
Kennedy described the casting process as a success, especially with Gray, who worked closely with a rotating cast including Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, and Aaron Pierre. “He would just get so excited by the actors he got to work with,” she said. Despite no current plans for sequels, Kennedy acknowledged the actor’s potential: “I will be very surprised if he doesn’t go on and we don’t try to see if there might be future stories.”
Kennedy emphasized the creative freedom that came with not planning a franchise. “It was kind of nice not going into this and not having to think that way. We could just make a movie and tell a story,” she explained. Kennedy and the team completed filming Star Wars: Starfighter in London just hours before her interview.
As she steps down from her executive role at Lucasfilm, Kennedy continues overseeing post-production on The Mandalorian film, directed by Jon Favreau and scheduled for release in May. “We finished shooting in November,” she said, confirming her active role in managing the film’s visual effects.
Dave Filoni, now Chief Creative Officer, and Lynwen Brennan, Executive Vice President, take over leadership of Lucasfilm. Kennedy guided the transition over the past two years. She now shifts her focus back to producing. Her future involvement in Star Wars projects will depend on the direction set by the new leadership team.
