Robert Downey Jr. & Timothée Chalamet Hype up ‘Dunesday’ for 2026

Robert Downey Jr. recently coined a name for the day Avengers 5 and Dune 3 will both premiere in theaters. There is considerable hype fueling the release of both films, as they are expected to be massive cinematic events. The former will mark Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, while the latter will continue Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi saga, which began in 2021.

Robert Downey Jr. names Avengers 5 and Dune 3’s release day

At a special screening for Dune star Timothée Chalamet’s latest film, Marty Supreme, Robert Downey Jr., who spoke with Chalamet about his work on the film and their respective careers, brought up the fact that they both have films scheduled to open on the same day this year: Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three.

The Iron Man actor told the audience, “We both have films opening on December 18th, and we decided to coin a name for it. We’re thinking ‘DUNESDAY.'” The audience laughed after hearing the Oscar winner’s catchy name for the double billing. Downey then quipped to Chalamet, “We’ll see if we’re still friends by then.”

“Dunesday” will be Robert Downey Jr.’s second time being part of a double-billing event. He was previously a part of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, revolving around the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Downey appeared in the latter film, playing Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss, a high-ranking member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, opposite Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer.

This will also be the case for Downey’s Avengers: Doomsday co-stars, Simu Liu and Florence Pugh. The former appeared in a supporting capacity in Barbie, playing one of the Kens, while the latter appeared alongside Downey in Oppenheimer, playing psychiatrist Jean Tatlock. Notably, Pugh will also star in Dune: Part Three, reprising her role of Princess Irulan from Dune: Part Two.

Both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are expected to compete for IMAX screenings and other premium formats.

Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely’s screenplay. The Russos also co-produced the film with Marvel Studios via their production company AGBO.

Meanwhile, Dune: Part Three is helmed by Denis Villeneuve from Jon Spaihts’ screenplay. Villeneuve also co-produced the film with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, and Tanya Lapointe.
