Matthew McConaughey’s New Crime-Drama With 97% on RT Gets Release Date

Matthew McConaughey’s latest crime drama, The Rivals of Amziah King, has officially locked its release date. The film, which has already got a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, will hit U.S. theaters later this year as part of Black Bear’s newly announced 2026 distribution slate.

The Rivals of Amziah King is finally coming to theaters

The Rivals of Amziah King will debut in theaters in a limited capacity on August 14, 2026, before expanding nationwide on August 21, 2026. The film premiered at SXSW last year, where it received a standing ovation, and has since received raving reviews, landing a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Andrew Patterson, the crime-drama is about Amziah King, a charismatic bluegrass musician living in rural Oklahoma who also runs a honey-making business. When his estranged foster daughter re-enters his life, his growing business starts drawing unwanted attention from rivals who threaten everything he has built. What starts as a quiet, grounded story quickly turns into a suspense-filled battle over loyalty, ambition, and survival.

Alongside Matthew McConaughey, the cast includes Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Scott Shepherd, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori, and Rob Morgan. Together, they populate Amziah’s world as friends, rivals, and competitors pulled into the fight surrounding his booming honey business.

The Rivals of Amziah King is part of a broader theatrical rollout announced by Black Bear, which has dated several high-profile films for its 2026 U.S. distribution slate. Black Bear confirmed the release dates on January 14, continuing its push as a growing domestic distributor planning to release up to 12 theatrical titles per year.

Other upcoming Black Bear releases include Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog, opening wide on October 23, and the comedy Spa Weekend, set for a September 4 release. The studio will also release Tuner, the narrative feature debut of documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, later this year. These titles join Jason Statham’s already dated action film Shelter, which opens January 30.
