Popular Lord of the Rings Rumor Debunked by Peter Jackson
Fans hoping for the Mithril Cut of The Lord of the Rings will be disappointed by the latest update from director Peter Jackson.
What did Peter Jackson say about the rumored The Lord of the Rings Mithril Cut?
There are multiple iterations of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies. The theatrical versions of — The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King — are the most noteworthy. Each movie then has an extended version packed with new scenes not seen in the theaters.
Now, fans are clamoring for the “Mithril Cut,” an even more extended version of the movies. In other words, it’s an “extended-extended cut.” Unfortunately for the LOTR diehards, the Mithril Cut does not exist.
“Are there great scenes that we never used? The answer is no,” Jackson said about the Mithril Cut in an interview with Empire. “There are bits and pieces, I guess. But if you did an extended-extended cut, or whatever it will get called, it would be disappointing. It would be the extended cut with a few extra seconds of something here and there; it wouldn’t be worthwhile doing.”
Speculation about the Mithril Cut exists because there are scenes of Aragorn’s courtship with Arwen.
“There was that. It was in Lothlórien,” LORT co-writer Philippa Boyens said. “But there’s not a lot. There really isn’t.”
The Mithril Cut might be dead, but Jackson teased a potential Lord of the Rings documentary down the road.
“The footage contains alternative takes. It contains bloopers. It contains a bit more of a sense of the mechanics of making the films,” Jackson explained. “But to this day, I haven’t persuaded [the studio], because obviously it’s a big undertaking.”
Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies are considered one of the most influential trilogies ever made. The three films grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide. Nominated for 30 Oscars, The Lord of the Rings trilogy won 17 Academy Awards, including a record-tying 11 for The Return of the King.
