Meryl Streep’s Return in Mamma Mia! 3 Gets Exciting Update

In the buildup to Mamma Mia! 3, franchise star Stellan Skarsgård has teased the possible return of Meryl Streep’s Donna Sheridan in the upcoming third installment. The two-time Golden Globe winner recently spoke about Streep potentially coming back to the fan-favorite rom-com film series, stating that it is possible for Donna to return despite the events of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

While speaking with Us Weekly in the 2026 Golden Globe Awards press room on Sunday, January 11, Stellan Skarsgård hinted at Meryl Streep potentially returning to the Mamma Mia franchise. He stated, “Everybody can be brought back in the movies. In the movies, it’s fantastic!”

Notably, Streep’s Donna Sheridan ends 2008’s Mamma Mia! by marrying Sam (Pierce Brosnan), while her daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), decides to postpone her wedding in favor of exploring the world.

Despite the relatively happy ending of the first film, 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again opens with Donna having passed away a year before the events of the sequel due to an unspecified illness. While Streep does appear in the film, she is featured only in brief flashbacks and spirit sequences.

Now, Skarsgård appears to challenge the narrative established in the previous films, stating, “She’s not dead, you know! Meryl Streep [as Donna] is not dead,” ahead of the third installment.

At the time of writing, it remains unclear whether the upcoming film will include Donna Sheridan at all. Meryl Streep has also not provided any official update regarding her potential return in Mamma Mia! 3.

What is confirmed is that the third film is actively moving forward. Skarsgård previously confirmed that Mamma Mia! 3 is in development, stating, “A lot of people are working on it to bring it back.” This follows Amanda Seyfried’s 2025 confirmation that the film is officially “happening.”

Despite the encouraging updates surrounding Part 3, the project has yet to receive an official release date.
