Tawny Newsome discusses first live-action Star Trek comedy series
Tawny Newsome has provided a new update on the proposed live-action Star Trek comedy. The series, co-created by Newsome and writer-director Justin Simien, was announced by CBS Studios at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024.
At the New York City premiere of Starfleet Academy, Newsome explained that the writing phase for the comedy has been completed and formally submitted to the studio. According to the actress and writer, the scripts were well received internally, though the project has not yet been officially greenlit.
She said, “The conversations that I have had is, ‘Hey, we finished writing it,’ and everyone said, ‘Yep, we love it.’ And then we turned it in, and then it was Christmas…. The business is in an interesting place right now… Who knows?” (via Trek Movie)
Newsome emphasized her confidence in the material and expressed pride in the collaboration with Simien. “I’m so proud of the work that Justin and I did. We love our scripts. We’re ready for someone to just decide. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be. If not, I’ll go do something else. But we love what we wrote,” she said.
Newsome also spoke positively about working with CBS Studios and Paramount+. She said, “We had really great partners at the studio. I know it is rare to come away from notes with studio folks sometimes and be like, happy and be like, ‘Oh my god, that was a great idea.’ They really helped us shape it in a way that still felt like us.”
For now, the fate of the live-action Star Trek comedy remains undecided. The actress said, “Now it’s just up to whatever creature is in the sky that controls all this.”
