Star Wars: How Stranger Things Impacted Shawn Levy’s Starfighter Movie
Shawn Levy, the director of Star Wars: Starfighter, revealed how his new movie compares to Stranger Things.
What did Shawn Levy say about Star Wars: Starfighter and Stranger Things?
Levy is no stranger to blockbusters. The Canadian director has helmed hits such as Free Guy, The Adam Project, and Deadpool & Wolverine. Levy’s next project takes him into the world of Star Wars for a new original movie, Starfighter.
Before jumping into the galaxy, Levy completed his work on Stranger Things Season 5, where he served as a director and producer. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Levy shared the similarities of working on big-budget projects like Stranger Things and Star Wars: Starfighter. Levy stressed the importance of the story and how it must be “anchored” by characters, not spectacle.
“If I’ve learned anything on Stranger Things, it’s that you can get intimidated by the scale of franchise expectation. But you will lose your way if that’s your focus. I’ve learned the need to stay rooted in character, and themes, and relationships on screen. Yes, there’s spectacle and scale, just like Stranger Things. And of course, Star Wars and Starfighter has spectacle and scale and adventure at a level I’ve never done in my whole career.
“But like Stranger Things, it’s also very much anchored in a human-scale character-sized story. I think that if I can balance the epic and the intimate the way the Duffers have with Stranger Things, I’ll make a movie and an original and new Star Wars adventure that can be really satisfying to fans and audiences.
Star Wars: Starfighter is an original story set roughly five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Levy directs from a script by Jonathan Tropper. Starfighter’s cast includes Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Star Wars: Starfighter opens in theaters on May 28, 2027.
