The Family Stone 2 Gets Major Update From Star After Diane Keaton’s Death

Sarah Jessica Parker gave an exciting update on The Family Stone 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2005 Christmas comedy-drama feature. Notably, an announcement came in November 2025 that the project was in development despite the death of Diane Keaton, one of the stars of the original movie.

Parker spoke about The Family Stone sequel during a sprawling interview with Variety. “I’m so excited…but it’s a rather bittersweet quandary given the loss of Diane Keaton,” the Sex and the City star said.

“But it was a very special group of actors, and prior to Diane’s passing, there had been conversations with everybody, so I hope that we’ll be able to. The hardest thing is everybody’s schedules,” she continued.

Diane Keaton passed away on October 11, 2025, at age 79, leaving behind an exceptional legacy in the entertainment industry. In the film, Keaton played Sybil Stone, and garnered critical acclaim for her performance.

Thomas Bezucha wrote and directed the movie, which garnered lukewarm responses from critics. It currently has a 52% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 160 reviews. However, the movie fared significantly better with audiences and was a box-office success.

Besides Parker and Keaton, the cast of The Family Stone includes Claire Danes as Julie Morton, Rachel McAdams as Amy Stone, Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone, Craig T. Nelson as Kelly Stone, Luke Wilson as Ben Stone, and Ty Giordano as Thad Stone. Parker played Meredith Morton in the movie, while Keaton essayed the role of Sybil Stone.

In November, Bezucha shared details about the sequel during an interview with CNN after Keaton’s death. He spoke about how “haunted” he felt due to the “loss of Sybil for months now.” Bezucha added, “And so this was a blow on a tender bruise already. Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

The currently untitled sequel to The Family Stone doesn’t have a release date yet.
