Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid 2 Gets Title, Major Release Date Update

Following the massive success of the first film, Lionsgate has announced an update on The Housemaid 2, revealing the film’s title and more.

What is the latest The Housemaid 2 update?

According to Lionsgate, the company is officially getting ready for a sequel. Production on The Housemaid 2, which is titled The Housemaid’s Secret, is set to begin in 2026. While no official release date information was made available, it’s safe to assume that that means the studio is targeting a 2027 release date for it.

Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the Freida McFadden novel into a film, will return to write the sequel. Director Paul Feig is also being eyed to return, as are stars Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone. No word yet on whether or Amanda Seyfried’s character will be making a return.

“It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson. “We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to life on-screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney. The Housemaid’s Secret is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”

The news comes after The Housemaid has been a smash success at the box office. To date, the film has grossed over $133 million globally, and is being projected to earn upwards of as much as $250 million.

“The film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”

Alongside Sweeney, Seyfried, and Sklenar, The Housemaid also stars Michele Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins, Mark Grossman, Hannah Cruz, Indiana Elle, Megan Ferguson, and Ellen Tamaki. The film is directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine and is based on the hit bestselling novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, released in 2022.

In addition to leading the cast, Sweeney and Seyfried are also executive producing alongside McFadden, Alex Young, and Will Greenfield. The movie is produced by Feig, Todd Lieberman, and Laura Fischer.
