Hellboy’s Ron Perlman Reveals Why 3rd Movie Never Happened
Ron Perlman, who portrayed the eponymous character in writer-director Guillermo del Toro‘s Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), explained why Hellboy 3 didn’t get made. Both movies received favorable reviews from critics and a broad general audience. Despite this, Hellboy eventually got rebooted. Neil Marshall’s Hellboy, starring David Harbour as the titular character, was released in 2019. A second reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, debuted in 2024.
Ron Perlman confirms why Hellboy 3 didn’t get made
Perlman discussed why Hellboy 3 never happened during an appearance on The Joe Vulpis Podcast. Asked if Hellboy 3 was ever close to happening, the Sons of Anarchy actor simply replied, “No.” After Vulpis asked him to elaborate, Perlman said, “People moved on.” This prompted Vulpis to wonder whether he means the audience, the production companies, or the studios. Perlman then clarified, “Some of the creatives.”
The Cottonmouth star confirmed that he wanted to do it, believing that they “owed it to the fans.” He added, “I still do. I’ll do it now at 75 years old, if the right person comes along and says, ‘Okay.’ Because it was meant to be a trilogy. At the end of the second one, she’s [Selma Blair’s character Liz Sherman] with twins, and he [Hellboy] still hasn’t destroyed the Earth or saved the Earth, which is his oracle. The third movie was gonna have all that in it. It was gonna be the resolve.”
When Vulpis enquired if a screenplay was developed, Perlman disclosed that he didn’t know if there was ever a script, but he did know that Guillermo del Toro had figured out what the final movie would look like. “It would have been epic,” he said, adding, “That’s why it was a shame.”
Further in the interview, Perman noted that fans “dug” these movies, even though they didn’t make “Marvel money” and didn’t necessarily get “mandates” to continue making sequels. As he pointed out, the Hellboy movies are one of the most celebrated entries in the superhero genre.
