Sequel to 2021 MCU Hit Is Not Canceled, Confirms Lead
A Marvel star shared a brief update on a fan-favorite hero’s return, offering a mix of hopeful signs and lingering uncertainty. Simu Liu spoke about the future of Shang-Chi and what lies ahead for the character in the expanding Marvel universe.
Simu Liu says Shang-Chi 2 ‘is still happening’
Liu confirmed that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in development. “I sound like a broken record at this point, but it is happening,” Liu said at New York Comic Con (via People). The original film, released in 2021, grossed over $432 million worldwide. Liu did not provide a specific timeline for the sequel’s production or release.
Liu also revealed that his Marvel character Shang-Chi will appear in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. “I think the more immediate tease is of course, is [Avengers:] Doomsday,” he said. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars is set to follow on December 17, 2027.
He shared that working on Doomsday allowed him to form strong connections with fellow cast members. “I came away from Doomsday with like, a lot of, a lot of really fantastic friendships,” Liu said. He specifically praised Channing Tatum, stating, “He’s just one of my favorite human beings… such an admirable person.”
The confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday includes Robert Downey Jr., Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer. The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.
Liu expressed enthusiasm about working with Stewart and McKellen. “I had been particularly excited for the opportunity of getting to do scenes with McKellen [and] Stewart, who I grew up watching and idolizing,” he said. Describing the experience, Liu added, “It was just an incredible, incredible time.”
