Avatar: Fire and Ash Hits Huge Milestone but Is Still Far From $2 Billion

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially hit a major but unsurprising milestone, continuing the franchise’s streak of global box office dominance. However, with its theatrical run still active, the film’s path toward the coveted $2 billion milestone has become a central point of industry discussion.

Avatar: Fire and Ash goes past $1 billion worldwide with ease

Avatar: Fire and Ash has crossed $1.083 billion at the global box office after 18 days of release. The film has earned $306 million domestically and $777.1 million internationally (via Deadline). It now needs approximately $916.9 million more to reach the $2 billion mark. It is now the third-highest-grossing movie of 2025, going past Lilo & Stitch’s $1.038 Billion. The James Cameron-directorial only stands after Ne Zha 2’s $2.244 Billion and Zootopia 2’s $1.588 Billion.

The third installment in the franchise posted an international weekend gross of $129.6 million. It earned that total across 51 territories, reflecting a 29% drop from the previous weekend. Top international markets include China ($138 million), France ($81 million), Germany ($64 million), and Korea ($44 million). Japan grew 26% week-over-week, while key markets held with moderate declines: Australia (-14%), Brazil (-19%), UK (-26%), Mexico (-27%), and Italy (-41%).

Domestically, the film debuted with $89.16 million across 3,800 theaters. It retained the No. 1 spot in its second and third weekends, making $63.08 million and $40.02 million, respectively, leading to a current U.S. total of $306.02 million.

While the film continues its stronghold, its opening and weekly drops are still lower than Avatar: The Way of Water, which opened at $134 million and grossed $67 million in its third weekend. Hence, its journey to another $2 Billion outing is tougher this time around, despite huge overseas box office support.

Still, Avatar: Fire and Ash is James Cameron’s fourth film to surpass the $1 billion mark, following Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water. Whether it becomes his fourth $2 Billion hit remains to be seen.

The movie follows Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family as they face the Ash People, led by Varang. With a global trilogy total of $6.35 billion, the franchise continues its strong theatrical performance.

The film is rated PG-13 and runs 3 hours and 17 minutes.
