The Justice League director has shared a new behind-the-scenes image from Man of Steel, once again drawing attention to Michael Shannon’s portrayal of General Zod. He posted the black-and-white image on social media, highlighting the actor in character as Superman’s adversary.
Along with the image, Zack Snyder wrote on Instagram, “‘I will find him.’ Michael Shannon understood Zod down to the bone.” It quickly sparked a wave of reactions in the comments section.
One user wrote, “An outstanding casting. Most threatening DC villain on screen yet.” Another added, “The best and the most comic accurate CBM villain ever imo.”
Michael Shannon’s performance in Man of Steel has remained a talking point since the film’s 2013 release, particularly because of the movie’s controversial climax. In a November interview with Vanity Fair, the actor addressed the widely debated moment in which Superman kills Zod to prevent further civilian casualties.
The Nuremberg star explained that the decision was intentional and central to the film’s themes. He said, “I put him in a situation where if he [Superman] wants to save these people, he has to kill me, and he does, and that obviously led to a lot of sturm and drang, or whatever you say.”
Despite years of debate, Shannon made it clear that he stands by the creative choice of the project. “I really loved working with Zack, and I really loved making this movie. I think a lot of people say, ‘Oh, you know, this isn’t what he usually does. He just went for the big payday or something.’ But I’m proud of this movie. I think it’s actually about something,” he said.
