The Batman 2 Rumor Debunked as James Gunn Talks Casting

James Gunn has taken to social media to debunk yet another rumor, this time surrounding The Batman 2 and its potential cast.

What was James Gunn’s latest The Batman 2 update?

In a recent post on Threads, Gunn was asked about a rumor that suggested that Gunn stopped Matt Reeves from introducing a “realistic version” of the iconic Batman villain Clayface. According to the question, The Batman 2’s script was rumored to be delayed due to this.

Gunn laughed off the suggestion, questioning where something like that might even come from. “What? [laughing emoji] Where does this stuff come from? No it’s the same exact script it has been from the beginning,” said Gunn.

Gunn also explained why there haven’t been any The Batman 2 casting updates. “Batman Part II is a DC Studios film and Peter and I are producers. But generally we don’t have a ton of announcements about any movie that isn’t even in production yet. Things like the Lars as Brainiac announcement were because we knew it was going to get out there,” explained Gunn.

The development of The Batman Part II has been a long one. The original film was released three years ago in 2022 and was a massive hit. Starring Pattinson as the titular hero, the film made over $770 million at the box office.

According to a recent report, The Batman 2 will begin production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London, United Kingdom, on January 1, 2026.

Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman in the movie, while the rest of the cast remains mostly unknown. Scarlett Johansson was recently reported to be involved in the film as well as Harvey Dent’s wife. Other cast members from the original film, including Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb/The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, are likely to return for the sequel.

Co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman 2 is expected to see Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell reprise their respective roles as Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and the Penguin. Zoe Kravitz, meanwhile, is not expected to return as Catwoman/Selina Kyle. Production on the film begins this coming spring.

The Batman 2 will be released in the United States on October 1, 2027.
