Anaconda’s Jack Black & Paul Rudd Compare Reboot to Underrated Comedy Movie

Anaconda is helmed by Tom Gormican, the director of 2022’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The action comedy stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself who teams up with the CIA to investigate an arms dealer. Black and Rudd loved Gormican’s meta comedy and were excited to see that Anaconda includes some of those same comedic elements in their reboot.

“I was a big fan. I know Jack was too, of the director’s previous film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” Rudd told GamesRadar+. “This movie seemed to kind of scratch that same itch, which was a meta version and a very original take on something that was clever and funny and the right mix of really smart and not as smart.”

“It’s just funny as hell,” Black said about Anaconda. “I read a lot of scripts, and none of them are funny to me. And then this one comes along, and I was like, ‘Wait, this is ringing my bells.'”

In Anaconda, Black and Rudd star as Doug McCallister and Ronald “Griff” Griffen Jr., two friends who dream of remaking Anaconda, an action movie from 1997. With the two friends reaching middle age, Doug and Griff finally set out to the Amazon to shoot their remake.

“But things get real when an actual giant anaconda appears,” the official synopsis reads, “turning their comically chaotic movie set into a deadly situation.”

The rest of Anaconda’s cast includes Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, Selton Mello, and Ione Skye. Ice Cube, who appeared in the 1997 movie, makes a cameo as himself.

Gormican and Kevin Etten penned the script, based on 1997’s Anaconda by Hans Bauer, Jim Cash, and Jack Epps, Jr. Executive producers include Gormican, Etten, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form.

Anaconda will be released in theaters on December 25, 2025.
