The Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio recently offered a promising update regarding the franchise’s future and the possibility of The Karate Kid 7. He also stressed the importance of giving the franchise a “reset” and launching it the right way afterward.
What Ralph Macchio said about the future of The Karate Kid franchise
In a recent interview with People at the 24 Hour Plays Annual Gala, Ralph Macchio shared that “discussions” about The Karate Kid franchise’s future have taken place. “Between the series and the movie with Jackie Chan, all that colliding at the same time, I just think there needs to be a reset,” he added. The 64-year-old then emphasized the importance of “finding the perfect way to launch” the franchise after a reset, noting that the fanbase has remained since the series’ inception in 1984.
He continued, “But you want to service and be organic, and be true to the integrity of the characters. So that’s always a challenge once you are on the long game.”
The Cobra Kai actor revealed that, although there was nothing currently planned for the franchise’s future, the creatives have had “discussions all the time.” He added that he, the rest of the Cobra Kai cast, and the show’s creatives were “open to communicating” about the franchise’s future. “But something isn’t coming tomorrow. I don’t have that secret yet,” he further stated. “Maybe we do a few other things. And Cobra Kai never dies. Karate Kid lives forever.”
Several months earlier, Macchio had expressed interest in continuing the The Karate Kid franchise. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he expressed interest in doing a Cobra Kai film “two years from now,” adding, “I mean, why not keep the party going as long as it can be rooted in some form of genuine truth?”
The Karate Kid 7 and other future installments are unconfirmed as of writing. Notably, the most recent installment is The Karate Kid: Legends, which features both Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan‘s Mr. Han from 2010’s The Karate Kid in substantial roles. In the film, the pair trains Mr. Han’s great nephew, Li Fong (Ben Wang), after the latter experiences bullying at his school.
