A canceled Lobo movie has drawn renewed attention after recent comments revealed that Green Lantern was intended to be involved in the proposed DC movie. The project, which ultimately failed to move forward, was planned to be violent and R-rated.
Green Lantern almost showed up in Michael Bay’s unmade Lobo movie
Jason Fuchs has shared new details about the canceled Lobo film that was once in development at DC, revealing that the project would have featured Green Lantern and several other DC characters. The comments came during Fuchs’ recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, where the writer reflected on the scope and tone of the project.
According to Fuchs, the script was extremely violent and R-rated. “Hard R. Psychotic movie, very violent. It made Deadpool look like a Disney family film, which is probably why it ultimately didn’t get made, but that was one of my favorite projects we didn’t get to see across the finish line, but it was a fun one,” he said.
The screenplay reportedly incorporated a wider DC mythology. Fuchs confirmed that Green Lantern was part of the story, alongside other characters. “I loved writing that script, and there was a Green Lantern involved. There was all kinds of fun DC characters who popped up in the context of that,” he said. Fuchs also added, “There’s a lot of Lobo stories to tell, and I’d used a lot of Legion. It was definitely a Lobo movie, but it was also in some ways a first film in what could have been a Legion series.”
The scrapped Lobo project was not the only DC project in which Green Lantern nearly made an appearance. Around the same period, Zack Snyder had also planned to introduce John Stewart into the DC Extended Universe, opting for the Green Lantern over Martian Manhunter in a key scene. The scene was filmed with Wayne T. Carr cast as the Green Lantern, but it was later removed following studio review.
