’It Was Bulls—’: James Cameron Secretly Wrote Iconic 90s Movie
Legendary director James Cameron recently revealed that he wrote one of the 1990’s most iconic action films and joked that he was robbed of the credit for it.
What movie did James Cameron reveal he wrote?
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview, Cameron offhandedly revealed that he was the writer behind his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film Point Break. According to Cameron, he wrote the movie, which was credited to W. Peter Iliff, and he felt “stiffed” by the Writers Guild.
“I wrote Point Break,” Cameron said on the matter. “I flat out got stiffed by the Writers Guild on that. It was bullshit.”
Cameron is no stranger to spilling news like this, but his candidness still surprised some fans who didn’t know about the news. At the time of Point Break’s release, Cameron was in the middle of a legendary run, having written and directed The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and True Lies in a 10-year stretch.
Although Iliff is credited as the writer, Cameron says Bigelow developed the script with him. Originally released in 1991, the action film starred Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty, and Gary Busey.
The film followed Reeves, an undercover FBI agent, who infiltrates a group of bank robbers, and develops a complex relationship with its leader, Swayze. The movie wasn’t a massive hit in the box office, grossing just $83.5 million, but the movie became a cult classic since its release. In 2015, a remake was released, and just this past week, a TV series based on the movie was reported to be in the works.
