Prime Video Adds Divisive DC Movie Sequel Today

One of the most divisive movies that DC has ever released is now available to stream on Prime Video beginning today.

What DC sequel has is now on Prime Video?

Joker: Folie á Deux, the 2024 sequel to the hit 2019 movie Joker, is available now on Prime Video. The Todd Phillips-directed movie was highly anticipated ahead of its release, but drew divisive reactions when it did release.

Following its release, the film earned just $207.5 million worldwide, considered by most to be a failure due to its big budget of $190-200 million. The movie was also received poorly critically, holding just a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film does have some staunch defenders. Quentin Tarantino notably praised the movie, as did Francis Ford Coppola.

The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, who reprised his role as Arthur Fleck/The Joker from the original movie. Alongside Phoenix, Joker: Folie à Deux also stars Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, and Leigh Gill.

The first Joker movie was released in October 2019. It was a massive hit for Warner Bros. Pictures, bringing in approximately $1.079 billion at the global box office off an estimated $55 million budget. It was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, with Phoenix winning Best Actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir winning Best Original Score.

Joker was originally intended to be a stand-alone film; however, Phillips announced in June 2022 that a sequel was officially happening. Joker: Folie á Deux is set in a different continuity than James Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DC Universe, which officially kicks off this coming December with an animated Creature Commandos series.

The screenplay for Joker 2 was co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver, both of whom also wrote the first film.
