CODA 4K Review: Best Picture Winner Finally Gets Home Release
Apple’s CODA was the surprise winner for Best Picture at the 94th Academy Awards. While the film itself was overshadowed by a certain actor choosing to assault an awards show host, it has aged well in the years since its initial release. Now, four years after it originally came out, there’s a CODA 4K release, which is a rare move from Apple TV and one worth celebrating.
“As a CODA (child of deaf adults), Ruby is the only hearing person in her home. When she discovers a passion for singing, Ruby must choose between family obligations and her dreams. Winner of 3 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur),” says the official synopsis.
Featuring an emotional story and some truly special performances (particularly Troy Kotsur, who fully deserved his Best Supporting Actor win), CODA was a fitting Best Picture winner. Emilia Jones is the heart of the film and is able to match both Kotsur and Marlee Matlin as her parents. It’s a beautiful story and one that is hard to dislike.
From a technical standpoint, the CODA 4K release is a strong start for Apple. This release looks and sounds gorgeous as it sports both Dolby Vision and a Dolby Atmos track. This isn’t a very colorful film, which is fitting with the subject matter, but it looks sharp and full of detail. This is definitely the best way to enjoy the film at home.
Normally, this is where I’d go over the included bonus features. Sadly, the CODA 4K release features zero special features. Not a trailer or already-produced featurette, it’s strictly nada. It’s the only disappointing aspect of the release, and hopefully, if Apple continues with physical media, they’ll embrace bonuses more in the future.
CODA 4K Review: Final Verdict
While it’s a bummer that there are no special features, the CODA 4K release is still an easy recommendation. The film looks and sounds pristine, while it’s also exciting to see Apple releasing an original film on 4K. Let’s hope this becomes more of a trend, as there are some wonderful films that are currently streaming-only and deserve to be preserved physically.
