James Gunn Gives Interesting Man of Tomorrow Villain Update
James Gunn has shared an interesting insight regarding the villain, or villains, who will be featured in Man of Tomorrow.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Man of Tomorrow arrives in 2027. Serving as a follow-up to 2025’s Superman, the new movie is being directed by Gunn and will see David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor.
What did James Gunn say about Man of Tomorrow’s villain?
TheWrap reported in November 2025 that the villain in the Man of Tomorrow DCU movie will be Brainiac, which has been highly speculated among fans. Gunn, however, has yet to confirm this, as he’s largely avoided talking about the topic until now.
While Gunn didn’t flat-out say that Brainiac will be in Man of Tomorrow, he did confirm that the movie will feature a villain that isn’t Lex Luthor or General Zod.
This came after Gunn wrote a longer post discrediting rumors suggesting that David Bautista might be the top choice to play Brainiac in the film.
“Let’s forget a moment I’ve never said Brainiac was in the movie,” he wrote in that post. “ I freaking love [Bautista] & I have many ideas for who he could play in the DCU. But he & I have never discussed a role in Man of Tomorrow, nor have we discussed it amongst ourselves at DC. In addition, truly, NONE of the names, from the six or seven I’ve seen rumored for a role, have auditioned or been discussed at all. In general I’m just letting the silly rumors go – and this is certainly not the silliest I’ve heard recently – but Dave is a friend and that makes it more irritating. Btw I’m not blaming the poster here – I imagine this is coming from other places.”
Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
