Rob Reiner’s Being Charlie Explored Complicated Relationship With Son Nick Before Arrest

A 2015 Rob Reiner movie titled Being Charlie explored the late director’s complicated relationship with his son.

Rob Reiner — known for directing a large handful of beloved movies like 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap, 1987’s The Princess Bride, 1989’s When Harry Met Sally…, 1990’s Misery, and 1992’s A Few Good Men, among many others — tragically was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon. The case remains under investigation, but has been labeled an “apparent homicide,” per The New York Times.

Per Variety, “Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Rob and Michele Reiner, is in custody after the apparent homicide of the director and his wife on Sunday afternoon. Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday night at 9:15 p.m. and booked on a felony charge on Monday at 5:04 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department online records. The LAPD could not confirm to Variety whether Nick Reiner is in custody related to the homicide investigation into the deaths of Rob and Michele, but listed Nick’s booking description as ‘gang activity.’ His bail has been set at $4 million.”

What is Rob Reiner’s Being Charlie about?

Being Charlie, which was co-written by Nick Reiner, is a 2015 movie that loosely mirrors Rob’s son’s experiences with addiction and rehab. It is currently available to stream on Fandango at Home.

“The drug-addicted son (Nick Robinson) of a California politician (Cary Elwes) finds romance with a fellow patient (Morgan Saylor) in rehab,” a description of the movie reads.

Rob told The LA Times around the movie’s release, “The program works for some people, but it can’t work for everybody. When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”

Michele added, “We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.”

ComingSoon sends condolences to Reiner’s friends and family at this time.
