HBO Max Adds Classic 80s Comedy Movie & 2025 Sequel Today

HBO Max subscribers can now watch one of the best classic comedy movies from the 1980s on the streaming platform, along with its 2025 sequel.

As of today, fans of Rob Reiner’s mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap will finally be able to stream the 1984 cult classic on HBO Max. In addition, three months after its theatrical release, the movie’s sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which reunites the fictional heavy metal band of Christopher Guest’s Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean’s David St. Hubbins, and Harry Shearer’s Derek Smalls, is now available to stream as well.

What do we know about the Spinal Tap sequel?

“Estranged bandmates David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls are forced to reunite for one final concert,” reads the sequel’s official synopsis. “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues also marks the resurrection of documentarian Marty Di Bergi, who once again tries to capture his favorite metal gods as they contemplate mortality, and the hope that their 12th drummer doesn’t join them in The Great Beyond. Spinal Tap wrestles with their checkered past to put on a concert that they hope will solidify their place in the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues was directed by The Princess Bride filmmaker Rob Reiner, who co-wrote the screenplay with Guest, McKean, and Shearer. The sequel also features appearances from music royalty Paul McCartney and Elton John, along with Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. In addition to leading the cast, Guest, McKean, and Shearer also served as producers with Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matt George. Since its theatrical release, the movie has received a Tomatometer rating of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 133 reviews. This is significantly lower than the 1984 movie’s Certified Fresh score, which is currently at 98% based on 175 reviews.
