The comic, Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, inspired the 2004 movie’s story and setting. This is the first comic miniseries based on the character published by Dark Horse Comics. Mike Mignola developed the comic and its illustrations. Moreover, John Byrne, known for his work on Marvel’s X-Men and Fantastic Four, scripted it.
Hellboy follows the eponymous protagonist, a demon who, as a baby, was rescued during World War II by the Allied Forces. As an adult, he serves as a force for good, working as an investigator for the Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense.
Hellboy works alongside Abe Sapien, a psychic merman, and Liz Sherman, a woman who has pyrokinetic abilities. He helps the bureau stop paranormal threats, consequently putting him in the crosshairs of a resurrected sorcerer. The latter triggers an apocalypse with the intention of having Hellboy fulfill his destiny.
In addition to writing and directing the film, Guillermo del Toro co-wrote the story with Peter Briggs. The film’s cast includes Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, John Hurt, and Rupert Evans, among others.
