This year, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners became a big hit at the box office, after which he now moves on to his next major project, Black Panther 3. Meanwhile, he recently sat down for an interview with The New York Times, explaining what he’s up to post-Sinners, and also revealed the reason behind declining an invitation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences back in 2016. Speaking of not joining the academy he said, “It’s not out of animosity.”

He explained to the outlet that he remains preoccupied with commitments to his film school and other unions. “And I’m not good at judging things, bro. The act of ‘Hey, pick the best thing’ is very stressful for me, even when there’s no stakes involved,” he added.

Further, the 39-year-old director explained how he loves the everyday aspects of directing more that high‑society gatherings or red-carpet affairs. “People see the tuxedo, they see the red carpet, but it’s real blue-collar folks making these movies happen,” he said, mentioning that he fell in love with his work after realizing the extent to which it’s a real job.

“Most days, I’m wearing coveralls and Columbia gear, trying to find solutions that aggregate up to a story. And that enabled me not to engage with any narratives around what it is that we do,” he added.

Coogler also recently confirmed that Black Panther 3 will be his next project and is in the works. Although the film is speculated to release in 2028, its official release date has not yet been confirmed.
