Dogma 2: Kevin Smith Names Who Can Replace Alan Rickman
Kevin Smith recently revealed who could replace Alan Rickman in Dogma 2. In a recent interview, he suggested Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, whose acting he admired, to take over for the late actor in the yet-to-be-materialized sequel. In the original film, Rickman essayed Metatron, starring alongside an ensemble cast that included Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, and others.
Kevin Smith wants Academy Award winner to replace late Alan Rickman in Dogma 2
In a recent interview with Slashfilm on their /Film Weekly Podcast, Kevin Smith revealed that he wanted Helen Mirren to step in for Alan Rickman in Dogma 2, calling her “incredibly Alan-adjacent.” He clarified that the 1923 actress would not be playing the Metatron that fans are familiar with and who Rickman played, but a new version exclusive to the film.
Smith recalled meeting Mirren along with Rickman at an Empire movie awards ceremony. He added, “When I was thinking, ‘Well, I don’t have Alan,’ at one point I was like, ‘Well, Adam Driver looks like a young Alan Rickman, just taller.'”
“But then I was like, no,” he continued. “Then I thought, ‘You know what? Helen Mirren, aside from being one of my favorite actors on the planet, I had that crossover moment with her and Alan at one point.'”
Smith stressed that being a “writer” and “romantic” allowed him to come up with a “connection” or “justification” for picking Mirren to take over Rickman’s role. He further stated, “But it started me thinking, maybe it would be Helen Mirren. So I’m writing it for Helen Mirren.”
One day earlier, in an interview with MovieWeb, Smith revealed that he was taking his time with the film. He also said that he had written 30 pages of Dogma 2’s script. However, he paused his work on the screenplay for other commitments, which he did not specify. He shared in a separate interview with the outlet that he stopped writing the film. This is because he started working on another project, a period piece set in the 1950s.
