DreamWorks Rereleasing 1 of Its Biggest Movies Ever in Theaters for Milestone Anniversary

DreamWorks has announced plans to rerelease Madagascar in theaters for its 20th anniversary.

Madagascar is a 2005 animated movie from DreamWorks Pictures and directors Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath. It originally made around $556.6 million at the global box office, making it the studio’s second-highest-grossing animated film of all time behind 2004’s Shrek 2.

When is DreamWorks rereleasing Madagascar in theaters?

On Twitter, DreamWorks Animation has announced that Madagascar will be returning to United States theaters on January 16, 2026.

A description of the film reads, “Alex the lion is the king of the urban jungle, the main attraction at New York’s Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends — Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo — have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity before an admiring public and with regular meals provided for them. Not content to leave well enough alone, Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and makes his escape — with the help of some prodigious penguins — to explore the world.”

The voice cast of Madagascar includes Ben Stiller as Alex, Chris Rock as Marty, David Schwimmer as Melman, Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria, Sacha Baron Cohen as King Julien XIII, Cedric the Entertainer as Maurice, Tom McGrath as Skipper, Chris Miller as Kowalski, Jeffrey Katzenberg as Rico, and Christopher Knights as Private.

Madagascar spawned a franchise that includes two direct sequels: 2008’s Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and 2012’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, the latter of which was co-written by Noah Baumbach. There was also a 2014 spin-off movie titled Penguins of Madagascar and several television shows, including The Penguins of Madagascar, All Hail King Julien, and more.

In addition to being DreamWorks’ second-highest-grossing animated movie, Madagascar is also the studio’s fifth-highest-grossing movie of all time. Shrek 2 still sits atop that list, while the two through four spots are 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2007’s Transformers, and 2005’s War of the Worlds.
