The Housemaid Author on How Sydney Sweeney Movie Is Better Than Book
Freida McFadden, the author of The Housemaid, got to see Paul Feig’s big-screen adaptation of her book three months before its release. After seeing it, she remarked on social media that the Sydney Sweeney-led film was superior to her book. Now, ahead of the film’s theatrical release, McFadden has elaborated on her sentiment.
Freida McFadden believes The Housemaid movie is better than her own book
Freida McFadden took to Instagram on September 16, 2025, to review The Housemaid, which she got to see early. She said that she loved the film and recalled telling her husband after the screening that it was “better than the book,” which the latter agreed with. She praised the movie further, saying it “captured everything that readers love about the novel!”
The author also praised the cast’s performances, noting that they were “nothing short of incredible.” She added, “It (almost) made me want to write another Housemaid book. (Almost!) The only problem is, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to wait until December to get to watch it again!”
In a recent interview with People at The Housemaid’s New York premiere, McFadden revealed the reason behind her initial reaction but did not divulge any details. She said, “I just thought the end was so exciting, and it really made the whole thing go out with a bang. I can’t give out any details about it, but I just loved it.”
McFadden acknowledged in a separate interview with E! News that the film made changes to the book’s ending, which she thought was “better.” She elaborated, “It’s more action, which I think works a lot better on the big screen.”
She also praised Paul Feig’s direction, saying he achieved the “exact vibe” she wanted from the film. “He’s that mix of funny and disturbing. I love him. He’s my favorite director right now,” she added.
The Housemaid hits theaters on December 19, 2025. Besides Sydney Sweeney, the film also stars Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Ellen Tamaki, among others.
