MCU Actor Teases Potential Return To Franchise Despite Death of Character

A major MCU actor whose character was killed off in 2025 has hinted that their story may not be over yet, reigniting speculation about unexpected returns in Marvel’s Multiverse Saga.

Olga Kurylenko talks about playing Taskmaster in Marvel Cinematic Universe

Speaking with Deadline, Olga Kurylenko addressed the creative choices that led to Antonia Dreykov, aka Taskmaster, being killed early in Thunderbolts. She shared that evolving script priorities played a role in the decision. “They were changing the stories, I think that [there were] too many characters,” she said.

Kurylenko then pointed to Marvel’s long-standing trope of resurrecting characters across timelines, continuities, and universes. “The thing is with Marvel, you never know. The superheroes die all the time, and they’re never dead. In one in one story, you disappear, suddenly you come back… I think you just never die.”

For those unaware, Taskmaster’s death came quickly in the film, which was under 18 minutes into the runtime. After one scene and a single line of dialogue before Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost shoots the character in the head. The moment surprised many viewers expecting a larger arc for the villain-turned-antihero, especially since Thunderbolts was Taskmaster’s second MCU appearance following Black Widow.

Behind the scenes, creatives acknowledged how tough it was to remove Taskmaster so early. While discussions explored shifting the death later in the film, director Jake Schreier ultimately avoided placing the emotional weight later in the story, as it would “hang over too much of the rest of the movie.”

But as Olga Kurylenko stated, Marvel has repeatedly shown that characters can reappear in unexpected ways. With the Multiverse Saga already rumored to reintroduce alternate versions of major heroes, including a new T’Challa, so another Taskmaster variant could arrive from a different universe. Marvel could also choose to revive the mantle with a new identity while keeping Antonia Dreykov’s fate intact.

All in all, regardless of the direction, Olga Kurylenko Taskmaster’s limited screen time and abrupt death leave ample room for a potential return in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe.
