David Corenswet Thought His Superman Audition Call Was for Top Gun 3

David Corenswet has shared new details regarding his casting in Superman. The actor revealed that he initially believed his audition call was for Top Gun 3 rather than Superman. Corenswet’s comments have since sparked widespread discussion on social media.

David Corenswet ‘was not expecting’ to land an audition for Superman

David Corenswet has admitted he never thought he would be in the running for Superman. Speaking with Jonathan Bailey for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Corenswet explained that he had no expectation of being considered for the DC role and initially thought the callback from his agent referred to an entirely different project.

Corenswet recalled receiving the initial audition request. He said, “Well, when I got the audition, I was standing on a ladder changing a light fixture… My agent said, ‘We think you know what this is about.’ I said, ‘Is it Top Gun 3? What am I waiting for?’” The actor added, “I really was not expecting it, although I think other people thought that I should be expecting it… Just statistically speaking, it feels completely impossible.”

The actor also addressed an early exchange with director James Gunn regarding the role of Superman. “I said to James Gunn, ‘If you wanted somebody cool, you should have hired somebody else.’ And he was like, ‘Oh, believe me. I know.’”

Corenswet’s performance was well-received, helping the film make over $616 million globally. The character’s future is already confirmed, with Corenswet set to return in Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.

During the same interview, Corenswet and Bailey also discussed their shared background in theater and their professional interests. Bailey and Corenswet went on to discuss their preparation for their respective roles in Wicked and Superman. The duo also expressed an interest in exploring writing and directing in the future.
