Catastrophic Business Deal’: Jane Fonda on Netflix Warner Bros. Agreement
In a recent op-ed, Jane Fonda shared her thoughts on the sale of Warner Bros. Discovery to Netflix and what it means for the future of the entertainment industry. Fonda explained how the deal would affect the industry that’s “built on free expression” and “the creative workers who power it,” among other things.
Jane Fonda says Netflix Warner Bros. deal ‘could destroy our creative industry’
Jane Fonda recently wrote an op-ed for The Ankler, putting down her thoughts on the sale of Warner Bros. Discovery and the companies who lined up with their offers. While Netflix wrote, “Acquisition Will Strengthen the Entertainment Industry,” when announcing their agreement of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, Fonda doesn’t seem to think so.
In her op-ed she wrote, “Regardless of which company ends up acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery or its parts, the resulting impact is clear: Consolidation at this scale would be catastrophic for an industry built on free expression, for the creative workers who power it, and for consumers who depend on a free, independent media ecosystem to understand the world.”
“It will mean fewer jobs, fewer opportunities to sell work, fewer creative risks, fewer news sources and far less diversity in the stories Americans get to hear,” she added. The 87-year old actress then went on to explain what this will mean for creative workers in the entertainment industry. “For actors, writers, directors, editors, designers, animators and crew already fighting for work, consolidation will lessen the overall demand for their skills,” she wrote.
Further, she went on to speak of how the current administration is using these mergers as “tools of political pressure and censorship.” Fonda also mentioned the Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel suspension incidents, referring to the Skydance-Paramount merger and what followed it.
Towards the end of the piece, the actress mentioned, “Without the foundation of the First Amendment, every other aspect of our democratic society, including the American guarantee that we are free to live as we choose, is at risk.”
