Oscar Winner Turned Down Scarlett Johansson’s The Batman 2 Role
An Oscar-winning actress turned down Scarlett Johansson’s mystery role in The Batman 2.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Batman 2, also known as The Batman Part II, arrives in United States theaters in 2027. Directed by Matt Reeves, the sequel to 2023’s The Batman will see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne.
News broke earlier this week that Johansson, who is best known for playing Black Widow in the MCU, will be starring in The Batman 2, though who she’s playing remains a mystery for now. It’s believed that the character could be a villainous love interest to Bruce Wayne, though official details are being kept under wraps at this time.
Who turned down Scarlett Johansson’s The Batman 2 role?
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, Emma Stone was originally offered Johansson’s part in The Batman 2. Her reasons for turning down the role are unclear at this time, though Sneider mentions that it could be because of a pay dispute.
“ I know [Stone] wanted a big payday for Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie, and I imagine she’d want the same for The Batman Part II,” Sneider reported. “…As a two-time Oscar nominee, Johansson doesn’t exactly come cheap, but I’ve heard whispers that she may have taken a lower salary upfront for The Batman Part II in exchange for points on the backend, ultimately betting on the success of the sequel. It’s unclear whether Stone was willing to make a similar concession or if the role simply didn’t speak to her.”
Stone has won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for her performances in 2017’s La La Land and 2024’s Poor Things. She’s also been nominated for Best Supporting Actress twice, for 2015’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and 2019’s The Favourite.
Co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman 2 is expected to see Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell reprise their respective roles as Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and the Penguin. Zoe Kravitz, meanwhile, is not expected to return as Catwoman/Selina Kyle. Production on the film begins this coming spring.
The Batman 2 will be released in United States on October 1, 2027.
