Johnny Depp’s Underrated Horror Comedy Coming to Prime Video
Johnny Depp’s 2012 horror-comedy Dark Shadows is set to make its way to Prime Video. The film brings back Depp’s portrayal of Barnabas Collins alongside a star-studded ensemble. Its arrival on the streaming platform will now give viewers another chance to watch Tim Burton’s take on the classic television series.
Dark Shadows to stream on Prime Video in December
Prime Video is set to add Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows to its catalog, with the horror comedy confirmed to begin streaming on December 30, 2025.
The update was reported by ComicBook, allowing subscribers to witness Johnny Depp’s stint as Barnabas Collins.
Released in 2012, Dark Shadows adapts the classic television series of the same name. Apart from Depp, the film also includes Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, and Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, among other cast members.
The story centers on Barnabas, whose affair with Angelique turns disastrous when he breaks her heart. Unknown to him, she is a witch who responds by cursing him. Angelique turns Barnabas into a vampire and imprisons him beneath the earth. When he is released hundreds of years later, he discovers that his former estate has fallen apart.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Dark Shadows currently holds a 35 percent score on the Tomatometer based on 260 reviews. Meanwhile, the audience rating stands at 46 percent on the Popcornmeter. However, the film eventually garnered its own fanbase over the years.
Richard Propes of The Independent Critic described the film as “beautifully constructed, generously written and well acted film.” He wrote, “A good majority of Dark Shadows weaves together such ingredients as devotion to the original television series, an effective “fish out of water” storyline, a rather droll humor and a refreshing classic romanticism.”
At the time of its release, Dark Shadows grossed more than $79 million at domestic box offices. It approximately earned $165.8 million in international markets. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned a worldwide total of $245.5 million.
