Two Marvel villain actors have reportedly advanced to the shortlist for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow. Early casting chatter suggests that DC Studios is actively evaluating multiple contenders as it searches for the film’s main antagonist.

Matt Smith among Man of Tomorrow’s top three picks for Brainiac

DC Studios has reportedly shortlisted Matt Smith for the role of Brainiac. He is one of three actors in contention for the part in Man of Tomorrow. According to Nexus Point News, the list includes Claes Bang, Matt Smith, and Sam Rockwell. “Some of the names we have mentioned have not been independently verified fully, as casting remains ongoing and no offers have been made,” the report stated. Sources also indicated that budget constraints at DC Studios could affect final casting decisions.

Matt Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who and Prince Philip in The Crown. He recently appeared in House of the Dragon, Morbius, and Caught Stealing. Sam Rockwell earned a recent Emmy nomination for The White Lotus. He previously won an Academy Award for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Claes Bang starred in The Square, BBC’s Dracula, and The Northman.

Nexus Point News reported that Claes Bang tested for Brainiac and noted, “there’s a handful of others who are going to be tested, so it’s undecided.” Scooper @MyTimeToShineHello added, “There are mostly unknown names and 3 big names testing for Brainiac (so far),” though neither DC Studios nor James Gunn has issued an official confirmation.

James Gunn will write, direct, and produce Man of Tomorrow, which Warner Bros. Discovery will release on July 9, 2027. Peter Safran will serve as co-producer. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will return as Superman and Lex Luthor. Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr. Production will start in April in Atlanta and continue through the summer. The film will feature Brainiac as the main antagonist.
