KPop Demon Hunters art book confirms fan theory about Rumi’s mother’s death
In The Art of Kpop Demon Hunters, one of the darkest fan theories surrounding the film appears to have been confirmed. HUNTR/X’s mentor, Celine, who also raised Rumi, seems to be the one responsible for the death of Rumi’s mother. Under the Sunlight Sisters chapter, the book states, “The Sunlight Sisters were a band of hunters/musicians prior to HUNTR/X. This trio’s genealogy carried forward into Rumi, as her mother Mi-Yeong was part of this group until her untimely death, when Rumi was an infant. From that point forward, fellow Sunlight Sister Celine raised Rumi and helped train HUNTR/X for the duty that befell them.”
The book also further mentions, “HUNTR/X serves as a family of sorts, especially for Rumi, filling a gap that was ripped open when her warrior mother was killed, at a time when Rumi was just a baby.” After this, director Maggie Kang is quoted as stating, “The trio each come from broken families, lonely upbringings where they never felt like they truly belonged anywhere, and so they really need this group to be their safe place.” This seems to imply Rumi’s mother’s cause of death as murder, which the film does not directly reveal.
Meanwhile, in an Instagram post by Simon Baek, a visual development artist for the film, Rumi appears in the concept art for the final scene in her demonic form. Here, dialogue mentioned under the art reads, “Celine… why did you kill my mother…” hinting at Celine killing Rumi’s mother when she was an infant.
