‘F— AI’: Frankenstein Director Guillermo del Toro Slams AI (Again)

Guillermo del Toro recently accepted an award for his adaptation of Frankenstein, starring Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, who were present with him on stage to receive the award. After opening up about his views on generative AI during a recent interview in October, del Toro once again expressed his opinion on the subject. The Mexican filmmaker praised the artists he worked with and stressed the value of human artistry over machine-made work.

Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 adaptation of Frankenstein received the Vanguard Tribute Award during the 2025 Gotham Independent Film Awards. During the ceremony held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, del Toro, along with Frankenstein cast members Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, accepted the award. During his acceptance speech, the Mexican filmmaker took the opportunity to thank all the artists who worked on the film, emphasizing the importance of human artistry over AI.

He spoke about Mary Shelley, the author of the original 1818 novel Frankenstein, mentioning how she was only 18 when she wrote the book and posed urgent questions, which she did with such urgency that they’re still alive 200 years later.

Further, he spoke about returning to the story in this time and age, saying, “So to return to the now at 61, with artists as extraordinary as Oscar and Jacob has been truly one of the greatest privileges of my life, and in them, I found another family. They don’t play archetypes. They dramatize the human condition and longing for a connection in a world that misunderstands them, both of them, and a world where pain only begets pain, which is, sadly, so urgent now, until someone decides to stop it.”

Del Toro then interrupted the announcement for the next award to share a few more words about the cast and crew that worked on the film. “The artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans,” he shared. “It belongs to all of them, and I would like to extend our gratitude and say, ‘f— AI,’” he added at the end.
