James Cameron and Sam Worthington tease major ‘heartbreak’ in Avatar: Fire and Ash
As Avatar: Fire and Ash prepares for its worldwide release, director James Cameron and franchise star Sam Worthington are hinting that the third installment may lead to “heartbreak” for fans of the science-fiction movies.
During the event, Cameron reflected on how the franchise has evolved over nearly two decades. He said, “It’s an interesting thing. We’ve been doing this for a while and that and I’m very proud of their work on this film.” The director stressed that viewers should prepare for scenes “of heartbreak, heart-wrenching heartbreak in this movie like you haven’t seen since Titanic. And I’m serious about that.”
Cameron also emphasized that Fire and Ash is “very hopeful.” He added, “It really doubles down on the strength and importance of family, and you see all of the conflict and all the dysfunction and all that. But when the chips are down, the sullies stick together.”
Worthington, who returns as Jake Sully, also discussed the film’s emotional impact during his own interview at the premiere. Responding to whether the film brought him to tears, he compared the experience to the previous installment.
The actor said, “Yeah, it’s like if the second one went to the depths of the ocean, this goes to those deep emotions. That’s what this saga is trying to do. It’s trying to increase not only the world, but how you feel about these characters. So, yeah, it’s passionate, and it’s heartbreaking in times.” Worthington also spoke fondly of the cast and crew, calling them “family” after years of collaboration.
