Zootopia 2 Shatters Records With 2025’s Biggest Global Box Office Opening

Zootopia 2 dominated the Thanksgiving holiday with a historic box office debut as the film became the biggest global opening of 2025 and set a milestone performance in China, where it earned an unprecedented $272 million.

Zootopia 2 sets several records during the opening weekend

Zootopia 2 led the domestic Thanksgiving frame with $156 million across the five-day period and $96.8 million over the traditional three-day weekend. Those figures are the second-highest Thanksgiving opening of all time, behind only Moana 2. The sequel also opened far stronger than the first Zootopia, which launched with $75 million in 2016.

The film’s international run carried even more momentum. Zootopia 2 generated $400 million overseas, powered by an extraordinary debut in China. Its $272 million opening there became the highest animated non-local debut in the market’s history and the sixth-highest opening weekend ever among all films (via Deadline).

Globally, the Disney sequel reached $556 million, ranking as the highest global animated opening ever at current rates and the biggest worldwide launch in Walt Disney Animation Studios history. It also posted a 239% increase over the original film’s opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Universal’s Wicked: For Good also held strong with $93 million in its second weekend, though it trailed the first film’s holiday performance. Still, with $393.3 million worldwide, it remains a major player in the current box office scene.
