The Matrix Director Gets Replaced for Zooey Deschanel Movie Trash Mountain

Lilly Wachowski, one-half of the iconic directing duo behind The Matrix, has reportedly exited her upcoming directorial debut.

According to a new report from World of Reel, Lilly Wachowski has exited Trash Mountain, an upcoming comedy film that Wachowski was set to direct. The film was originally meant to be Wachowski’s solo directorial debut, although that no longer seems to be happening.

What do we know about Lilly Wachowski’s exit from Trash Mountain?

The report doesn’t mention what happened with the project, so it’s unclear exactly why Wachowski left the project as of now. In her place, World of Reel notes that Kris Swanberg (I Used to Go Here) replaced Lilly in the director’s chair, from a script written by Rubey Caster and Caleb Hearon. Principal photography on the project began in October.

In 2024, Wachowski announced her intention to direct the movie, praising the film’s script as “beautiful and sad and funny” and a great representation of queer culture.

Trash Mountain is set to star Caleb Hearon, Zooey Deschanel, Kyle Marvin, Jaboukie Young-White, Jacki Weaver, and Holmes. The film follows “a gay Chicago man in his 20s,” who returns home “to rural Missouri to deal with the death of his father, an obsessive hoarder who has left a house full of items.”

With Wachowski leaving the film, this leaves her last project as 2015’s Jupiter Ascending, which she directed alongside her sister Lana as The Wachowskis. Lana would go on to direct 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, with Lilly not returning to the franchise that helped launch the pair into superstardom.
