Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo cast as Fiona’s sons in Shrek 5
Saturday Night Live’s Marcello Hernández and Superman’s actor Skyler Gisondo will lend their voices to the mischievous ogre brothers, Fergus and Farkle. They join the original cast, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, who reprise their iconic roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Zendaya will also make her debut in the series as Felicia, the couple’s daughter (via Deadline).
After years of anticipation, the return of Shrek comes 17 years after Shrek Forever After. The release date, June 30, 2027, comes after several scheduling shifts, including a previously planned December 2026 launch. The move gives the film a prime summer slot while making room for Minions 3 in 2026.
Plot details for Shrek 5 remain tightly sealed, though Eddie Murphy has already confirmed a Donkey spinoff, scheduled to begin production in September 2025, with a release expected three years later.
Shrek 5 is directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, both long-time contributors to the series. Vernon co-directed Shrek 2 and voices Gingy, while Dohrn previously worked as a writer and artist on earlier films and voiced Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After. Brad Ableson, known for Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Simpsons, joins as co-director.
Production is led by returning producer Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, whose credits include Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchises. Michael McCullers is writing the script.
The Shrek series has earned billions of dollars worldwide since its debut in 2001 and remains one of DreamWorks’ most successful properties. After all, it has inspired a Broadway musical, global live shows, and attractions across Universal Studios theme parks.
