Star Wars: Starfighter Finds Its Composer in 15-Time Oscar Nominee
A major development has emerged from the production of Star Wars: Starfighter, shifting focus to the film’s musical direction. New details have surfaced about who will be crafting the score, sparking widespread attention across the industry and fanbase. As the project advances toward its 2027 release, anticipation continues to grow around the creative choices shaping this standalone entry in the Star Wars universe.
Shawn Levy reveals who will compose music for Star Wars: Starfighter
Shawn Levy has confirmed that composer Thomas Newman will score the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter.
During an interview on On Film… With Kevin McCarthy, Levy stated, “If you asked me to name my favorite scorers, five of the Top 10 are Tom Newman.” He added, “Shawshank, Road to Perdition, Nemo, American Beauty. The guy is a maestro.” Levy emphasized that the score would be “classically inspired” but would not remix John Williams’ cues.
Levy explained that the film would feature original musical themes, akin to John Williams’ approach in past Star Wars films. “It may be inspired by some of that, but I knew that I needed a big-hearted movie score from a composer who, like John Williams, doesn’t shy away from themes,” he said.
“What John Williams embraces is that a movie can have multiple themes… So, not shying away from myriad musical signatures that help tell the narrative alongside and in addition to the words and the images.”
According to Levy, he personally reached out to Thomas Newman to pitch the idea of scoring the film. Newman requested the script and Levy’s ideas for set pieces and themes. After reviewing the materials, Newman agreed to compose the music for the project.
Star Wars: Starfighter is set in a new timeline with new characters created by Shawn Levy and Jonathan Tropper. Levy stated on The Business Podcast with Kim Masters that the creative freedom on this film is “equal to any other movie I’ve made,” noting that the only directive from Lucasfilm was to “make it new.”
The film is currently in production and scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027.
