Ralph Ineson responds to Rob Liefeld’s MCU VFX criticism
Rob Liefeld had reposted a GIF of Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and wrote, “Looks so fake. The Marvel FX fell off a cliff.”
The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Galactus actor, Ralph Ineson, answered with the comment “Rent free” along with a tears-of-joy emoji. Liefeld had already been publicly critical of recent MCU output, and his comments continued a pattern of dissatisfaction tied to his experiences around Deadpool & Wolverine.
Liefeld co-created Deadpool and said his issues with the MCU began when he asked for a special credit on Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel declined the request and placed his name in the standard end-credits section for comic creators.
He said he discovered at the film’s premiere that Marvel had not invited him and his family to the afterparty. Liefeld also said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did not acknowledge him on the red carpet despite standing nearby.
Liefeld said on his podcast that the situation at the premiere “was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat me” and claimed that “Kevin Feige does not treat comic book creators well” (via The Hollywood Reporter). He then announced that he had cut ties with Marvel. Months later, following the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, he posted an image of an almost empty IMAX theater and said the movie was getting “very little repeat biz” because “it’s impossibly dull and boring.”
The Fantastic Four: First Steps earned largely positive reviews, scoring 86 percent with critics and 90 percent with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film grossed over 521 million dollars worldwide. The movie ends with Galactus defeated and sent elsewhere in the universe.
The Fantastic Four will return in Avengers: Doomsday, which features Doctor Doom as the main antagonist.
