Tom Brittney’s Batman Speculation Begins After James Gunn’s Comment
A brief comment from James Gunn has stirred speculation about DCU’s future Batman. The remark ties back to a familiar name from the recent Superman casting process, raising new questions about what comes next.
James Gunn says Tom Brittney ‘is a great f—ing actor’
James Gunn has publicly praised Tom Brittney, stating on Threads, “That guy is a great f—— actor!” This comment came in response to a fan post on Threads that featured Brittney and referenced him as “Bruce,” prompting speculation about the actor potentially being considered for Batman in the DCU. Brittney was previously a finalist for the role of Clark Kent in Gunn’s Superman project, indicating an existing professional connection.
Gunn’s praise followed his post about storyboards for Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel. The specific reply to a fan-casting Brittney as Batman has raised interest, especially since Gunn does not typically respond to such posts. This has led to renewed speculation among fans about possible casting developments for The Brave and the Bold, which does not yet have a confirmed release date.
Brittney had previously auditioned in full costume for Superman, with Gunn acknowledging in 2024 that Brittney wore and damaged Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel suit during his screen test. Gunn also said, “Tom is truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy.” This statement further highlights Brittney’s standing with the director.
Gunn previously explained that he keeps actors he likes in mind for future roles, even if they don’t land their initial audition. He later cast Nicholas Hoult, who had been a finalist for Superman, as Lex Luthor in Man of Tomorrow. Gunn confirmed that filming begins in April 2026.
In an interview with The Ringer-Verse, Gunn said he had actors in mind for Batman but noted those ideas might not lead to casting. He stated, “I have guys that are at the top of the list for me… But […] they aren’t David Corenswet. So, they didn’t get the job.” Superman and Batman have historically shared physical similarities in the comics, often making casting overlaps feasible.
