Star Wars: Starfighter Director Reveals 1 Note Lucasfilm Gave on Ryan Gosling Movie
Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy shared the mandate he received from Lucasfilm when crafting his new movie.
What feedback did Lucasfilm give Star Wars: Starfighter?
With many of the previous Star Wars movies, filmmakers had to adhere to specific rules and storylines for continuity purposes within a particular trilogy. During an appearance on The Business podcast with Kim Masters, Levy spoke about filming Starfighter and the process of making a Star Wars movie.
Levy has had quite the unique experience making is entry in the franchise. Lucasfilm’s only demand has been originality.
“There is no mandate or interference other than the constant encouragement, ‘Make this new.’ And that’s the truth,” Levy said. “Every time I’ve asked, ‘Should I use this character that was maybe in that movie?’ Every time it’s, ‘You know what? People have seen that. Do something new.’”
Star Wars: Starfighter is based on new characters and ideas from Levy and screenwriter Jonathan Tropper. Levy explained that this autonomy on Starfighter is something he’s never had before.
“So far, I’ve had more freedom on this movie: it’s equal to any other movie I’ve made, including the original movies like Free Guy and The Adam Project, where it was based on no legacy,” Levy added. “So, so far, it’s very, very liberating.”
Star Wars: Starfighter is headlined by Ryan Gosling, who plays a character tasked with protecting a young boy, played by Flynn Gray. The rest of the ensemble includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Star Wars: Starfighter is set five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. As previously stated, Starfighter is based on an original idea by Levy and Tropper. Filming is currently underway.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 28, 2027.
