Star Wars Update Reveals if Rian Johnson’s Trilogy Is Still Happening
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy has received a horrible update.
Johnson previously directed 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi for Lucasfilm. Around the time of that movie’s release, it was announced that Johnson would also write a brand-new trilogy of Star Wars movies. He also intended to direct at least the first movie.
The project never came to fruition, though, and, according to a new update, it sounds like it never will.
What is the update on Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is now “effectively dead.” While Johnson said that a part of his brain “will always be in Star Wars” and that the franchise has become “so much a part” of the way he thinks, it sounds like it will never happen.
Johnson told Rolling Stone this past July that the reason why the trilogy never happened is largely because of the Knives Out franchise. At that time, the director said he was open to working with Lucasfilm at some point in the future should the opportunity arise, though there have been no new developments on that front.
“[Lucasfilm and I] had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy,” Johnson said. “The short version is Knives Out happened. I went off and made Knives Out, and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in Star Wars, I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.”
The next Star Wars movie will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, which arrives in United States theaters on May 22, 2024. John’s Knives Out 4, titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will be released in select theaters on November 26, 2025, before it then comes to Netflix on December 12.
