Sequel to Beloved Diane Keaton Movie Planned Despite Actress’ Death
Monte Carlo and Fargo director Thomas Bezucha has confirmed that he has started developing a sequel to his 2005 comedy-drama The Family Stone, right after learning about the recent death of Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton. The Annie Hall star passed away over a month ago at the age of 79. In the 2005 movie, Keaton played the titular family’s matriarch, who is trying to keep her family together while dealing with the unfortunate news that her breast cancer had returned.

During a recent interview with CNN, Bezucha shared that the grief of losing Keaton has compelled him to develop ideas for The Family Stone sequel. He expressed his desire to honor Keaton’s memory through the project.
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha said. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
In addition, Bezucha also confirmed that he would only push through with the sequel if the movie’s original cast would be interested in reprising their respective roles. Although nothing has been officially set yet, the filmmaker revealed that he has already reached out to them and was given “unanimously positive responses.”
The Family Stone movie was written and directed by Bezucha. The ensemble cast also included Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, and Tyrone Giordano. Despite receiving mixed reviews during its theatrical run, the movie still managed to become a box office hit. It earned a worldwide gross of over $92 million against a budget of $18 million.
